Ready! Set! Breathe.

Step One - Have an idea for a novel,  (Check)

Step Two - Write this novel and get it published. (in progress)

Step Three - Uh...was there supposed to be a warning somewhere that trying to write and publish a novel involved some serious--I don't know--WORK!!!  (YIKES!!)

I've seen the work and perseverance pay off for other aspiring authors like Adam Heine who blogs at Author's Echo.  He was kind enough to share his successful query that landed him his agent.

With each step in my own journey, I'm sure I'll reach my goal.  This first week of 2012 was a good week.  I decided to focus on my 250 word a day challenge  with MINGLED...and beat it.
Last week - 29,500 word count
Beginning this week - 32,000 word count
#writemotivation - I've started my first book, Under The Never Sky by Veronica Rossi, so I'm on my way to meeting my "read 2 books for the month of January 2012" goal.  I posted at least 3 posts and commented on a lot more than 10 to 15 other blogs for the week.

Here's a snippet of MINGLED:

Valen threw his hands in the air, exasperated.  “There are girls here if you - ”

He cut short as Thane bent forward, revealing two long swaths of dark feathers pressed against his back.  Thane groaned and brought his face near to his knees.  Long, downy feathers, pitch black, sprang free from their restraint, rising like dense shadows from his skin.   As he returned to his full height, his wings stretched wide with all their brilliance, soaking in the waning sun, stealing all the color into its dark beauty.  I’d seen them before, but in worst circumstances.  Yet, like the others in the room, I stared slack jawed in awe.

“This,” he said, gesturing to his wings, “is what I am.  And if what I learned today is true, you are all little more than pawns in a high stakes game, nothing Special at all.”

So here's a goal roll call to remind and inspire:  How are you doing with your goals?

  5. I so want to read Under the Never Sky. Apparently the launch last Saturday was fabulous! Sounds like your motivation is right on top of those goals! After one week, I am still on target.... Let's keep at it!

  6. I'm so glad that you are reaching your goals. It's wonderful! Good luck.

  7. Fantastic! I'm so glad you're meeting your goals and exceeding them.
My goal for reading this year is minimal - so I'm a little envious of your success there.

We'll keep cheering you on :D

  8. Sounds like a great first week Angela, congrats. Loved the snippet. Good luck with this week :)

  9. Two fifty words a day is good target because in my experience you usually exceed it and feel inordinately good. Too ambitious a target that you fail to reach needlessly brings you down. Routine is everything, even when you feel least inspired. Routine carries you through. Good luck for 2012 Angela

  10. Tracey - Thanks so much for checking it out. Working to put one foot in front of the other.

Joanna - I would have loved to be at the launch. Probably so much fun.

Angelina - Thank you very much. Like Dory from Finding Nemo, if I just keep swimming, I can get where I want to be.

K.T. - LOL!! Nothing to envy at. I don't have a big reading goal so this is working just right for me.

Raelyn - I appreciate you checking it out. Thanks for all the luck. I can certainly use it :-)

  11. Love the descriptions in your excerpt, Angela. Keep reaching for that goal. :)

  12. Mike - I believe you're right. Setting and meeting a realistic goal is so much better than trying for bonkers and failing every time. Definitely not good for writing morale and terrible for setting up a routine.

  13. Thank you, Cate, for your encouragement.

  14. Sounds like you're making great progress! Thanks for sharing a snippet. I do love winged beings. ;)

My first week of January was decidedly less productive, but I did just spend this weekend sprucing up the blog a bit. I'm also nearly done with my first book of 2012. So yay!

Clarissa - Keep up with your goals, Clarissa. I look forward to hearing good things from you.

Colene - Oh, Adam's query was so great. It fit the whole story into a few short paragraphs. I'm so in admiration.

Barbara - If anything I do can inspire something positive, then I feel I've accomplished something great.

  21. I'm curious as to what Valen and Thane are. Thanks for sharing the snippet.

Yea, for reaching your writing goal. I got through all my revisions and edits last week and roll onto the next deadline. My goal this week is to edit what I wrote so far, then start writing furiously next week. At least 5,000 words a week.

I started my second book this month. I'm surprised. I usually read slower than that. I read until I'm sleepy before bed.

  22. I really enjoyed the snippet. Thanks for sharing. :)

And congrats for beating your goals!

  24. I love your snippet!

I have a new WIP that I'm writing because I'll go crazy if I don't. Though I am trying to work up the nerve to query widely. It's always been my problem. I query only a teeny tiny bit then give up. I'm a wuss!

  25. Ooh, nice excerpt!

You are right. The hard work part of writing is what separates the wanna be writers from the writer writers!

  26. Good job on your goals so far- it DOES take a lot of work! I need to read more this year, definitely! Your snippet sounds very interesting!

  27. Stay with it, Angela. You're on a roll.

  28. Congrats on all your great goal success! I wish I could say I have been as successful. BUT... I have been making progress! Not always specifically what I thought, but progress nonetheless. That counts, right?

  29. Taking it day by day is how I do it. Good luck accomplishing all you want to this year! Nice excerpt. :)

  30. Started a reading/review challenge that will help me a lot with my "Review at least 25 books in 2012" resolution, so that is going good. Also, have #writemotivation to fall back on to keep my writing on track. So far things are looking pretty nice for my first 9 days into the new year. Glad to hear everything is going good for you as well.

P.S. I loved your story excerpt.. "your all just pawns, nothing special" - makes me really want to find out what's going on.

  31. Beautiful writing. :) Great imagery.
I'm writng a few YA at the moment. My goals for 2012 is to 'bag' me an agent. :) I have a dream agent in mind so all fingers and toes crossed she loves me:) ( That isn't stalkerish at all ) lol.
I look forward to following you!

  32. Love the excerpt! I haven't set goals for 2012 - eep! My goal is to set goals.

  33. Just finished my latest (and best) pass in revisions last night! So I'm feeling good. It's nice to have time to read more blogs.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I'm getting on. I'm almost three quarters of the way through my rough edits before my CPs get to see it.

    :-)

  35. Wow, what a visual! I love your excerpt! Favorite line is "rising like dense shadows from his skin." Very nice :)

  36. Looks like I agree with Jess, I'm loving this line: "Long, downy feathers, pitch black, sprang free from their restraint, rising like dense shadows from his skin."

My goals, well, let's just say, my "issues" in life are totally getting in the way! I absolutely have gotten plum depressed about my neck problem. Sitting at the computer makes my head feel like a thousand pound bowling ball balancing on a broken twig!!

You, on the other hand, are doing a fabulous job!!!

  37. Oh, I've been trying to design a gadget that shows my wip progress. Where did you find yours? Thanks!!

    ReplyDelete
  38. It sounds like you are well on your way Angela! I love your goals:) And your snippet!

  39. I'll be doing better at my goals once work calms down for me. Hopefully, at least.

And keep going. One of my professors is a published children's author and he said if you stick with it, things will always work out with publishing.

  40. you're inspiring and refreshing! i'm glad you're goals are going so well - i'm still listing and sorting - but this was a good writing week - so i'm happy about that.

another goal is to comment more on blogs - i've really been bad...doing better this week.

    keep it up!
