The Last Day

The last day of the month can mean different things for different people. For me, it's a chance to review my pink Post It note to see what progress I've made on my goals since it's the last day to "get'er done." I've got a few hours yet to claim victory on a few things. I'll just have to do my best, which is all I can honestly ask of anybody else or myself.

Although it's the last day of the month, the Confessions of a Sex Fiend series virtual book tour is still going strong. Now's as good a time as any to check out today's spotlight at BookLover Sue. Make sure to enter the giveaway for custom swag.

When it comes to goals, do you have any rituals for making sure to complete them, whether small ones or large ones?

What You Didn't Know About Rayven

I will have to borrow this from Lemony Snicket, paraphrasing: If you don't want to know any more about me and my alter ego Rayven, today's stop at Darkest Cravings may not be for you. The questions get real, deep and somewhat sexual. So do my answers...honest answers.

*heat flushing cheeks, breath getting erratic*

Okay, for those of you who've heeded the warning and still want to know more about Rayven, click here to check out the interview. *eep!*

To Know Rayven Godchild

Publishing as myself is fun. I love my Angela Brown titles. You can check them out scrolling on the left-hand side of the screen.

Publishing as my alter ego, Rayven Godchild, comes with it own fun. I get to traverse some of the naughtier edges of my imagination but do so while making sure I have a story to tell.

If you haven't had a chance to download the Confessiosn of a Sex Fiend boxed set, now's the time to do so. It's still 99cents (I'll check to make sure I didn't miss something when requesting the price change back to $4.99).

Anywho, the thing about writing erotica is that I choose not to publish something that's just sex for sex sake. That's done often enough and probably selling way better than me. The Confessions aren't just, "He sexed her. She sexed him." The End. There are people who expereince sensations and waves of feelings. I write the story to touch on that, even if just grappling at the tip of the iceberg.

Over at Author Karen Swart's blogspot, you can learn a little more about my alter ego. Click here to check it out and enter the giveaway as well.

Humpday Happy Places

My alter ego, Rayven Godchild, is visiting over at happy place number one, A TiffyFit's Reading Corner, for a spotlight on the Confessions of a Sex Fiend series. My blogspot is happy place number two because we get to hear from author-extraordinaire, Kai Strand.

~~~Take it away, Kai!~~~
In my experience, each new book I write takes me on a different journey than the last. Worth the Effort: Ella’s Story was no different.
The inspiration for writing the story is the first different thing. Oddly, it was inspired more from a professional standpoint than an emotional one. At first, that is. As each year wanes, I review how well I met the career goals I set for that year, and I forecast where I want my career to go in the year to come. Entering 2014 I had the advantage of already having two books under contract for publication, which allowed me to look beyond my standard goal of seeing two new titles published per year. I decided I wanted to provide my avid readers with novellas. Short, emotional reads that are as affordable as they are easy to digest.
I’m an eclectic writer, jumping from contemporary, to speculative, to fantasy, and I wanted to make sure my readers had enough of their favorite flavor to keep their appetite satisfied. So I knew whatever I wrote this year would need to be in ONE genre! That is why I decided to write two novellas in differing point of view. It forced me to write two contemporary stories, instead of flitting off to fairyland or tackling a time travel. Plus, there are two sides to every story, and if you like Ella’s, later this year you’ll find out more about Ayden’s.
The third and most different step in this journey was the research. I write fiction and haven’t found need to do much research beyond some online searches for historical timelines, or how things work. This story, however, has a homeless teen in it. A subject I knew nothing about. So I took a field trip to a local non-profit that provides transitional housing for teens who want another chance. Emotional doesn’t begin to describe what I felt that day. I left that amazing place recommitted to telling the story of an underage homeless boy and to shedding some light on a plight that stays pretty under the radar.
It is true that inspiration comes in many forms, but the journey that shaped this story has been equal parts logical and emotional, thrilling and anxiety producing. But one thing for certain, it has been Worth the Effort.
About the book:
Ella Jones is a coward. There is a teen boy living in the alley behind her work and she is terrified of him.
Desperate to leave behind the stereotypical and judgmental world she was raised in, Ella forces herself to make a true connection with seventeen-year-old Ayden Worth. As their friendship grows Ayden’s quiet, gentle ways teach her true courage.
But there’s more to Ayden’s story than Ella knows. When their worlds collide in the most unexpected place, Ella feels betrayed. Will she find the courage to learn who Ayden really is, or will she determine he’s not worth the effort?
WORTH THE EFFORT: Ella’s Story a young adult contemporary romance novella at 19,000 words.
About the author:
When her children were young and the electricity winked out, Kai Strand gathered her family around the fireplace and they told stories, one sentence at a time. Her boys were rather fond of the ending, “And then everybody died. The end.” Now an award winning children’s author, Kai crafts fiction for kids and teens to provide an escape hatch from their reality. With a selection of novels for young adult and middle grade readers and short stories for the younger ones, Kai entertains children of all ages, and their adults. Come Take a Read on the Wild Side
I must confess something...
I wrote the Confessions of a Sex Fiend series because the idea was fun and enticing...and I wanted to push my imagination to some very interesting places.
Mission One accomplished.
Mission Two: Share these sex time stories with the world through my alter ego, Rayven Godchild.
Mission three is not my mission alone. This is where friends, family, readers and so much more come into play: Tell others about it.
This virtual book tour is one way it's happening, but I call upon you all, humbly asking for you to share where you can, within your comfort zone of course, about the Confessions and the giveaway. Go to Provocative Pages to check out their review and enter the giveaway if you haven't entered yet :-)
A Hot Stop
Mila Ramos was kind enough to point the spotlight on Confessions of a Sex Fiend by my alter ego Rayven Godchild. As steamy a read as the series can be, the book tour has a swag giveaway that's worth checking out. Click here to visit so you can enter for your chance to win.
And have you done a query? I attempted one for my YA urban fantasy/dystopian, BEACON, as a way of directing my story. A huge part of me is looking to self-publish this novel. It's a dystopian and there's lots of talk that dystopians are dead as far as agents and editors are concerned, but I think I may find a place or two to try my luck. Who knows? That is the beauty of having a choice :-)
I'm heading over to Unicorn Bell to see if one of the fine folks there had a chance to look over my query. I could use loads of advice if I'm going to send this darling out for consideration by an editor. Stop by as well. Perhaps you can take notes on things I didn't do so well to help you improve your own query.
Let the Games Begin
Today begins summer fun for my Chipmunk. By day she'll be free of school schedules and tight-ruled regimens, free to have fun with other kids at her day camp (man, to be a kid again lol!!). By night, I might see if I can wrestle her into reading a new set of books. She's totally wrapped up in the Diary of a Wimpy Kid novels so this will be an interesting attempt.
Today also marks the first day of Rayven Godchild's Confessions of a Sex Fiend series virtual book tour by Bewitching Book Tours. Please stop by to check out the spotlight:
IWSG - Keep it Moving
Purpose: To share and encourage. Writers can express doubts and concerns without fear of appearing foolish or weak. Those who have been through the fire can offer assistance and guidance. It’s a safe haven for insecure writers of all kinds!
Posting: The first Wednesday of every month is officially Insecure Writer’s Support Group day. Post your thoughts on your own blog. Talk about your doubts and the fears you have conquered. Discuss your struggles and triumphs. Offer a word of encouragement for others who are struggling. Visit others in the group and connect with your fellow writer - aim for a dozen new people each time. Click here for the list and deets.
It's a point in the year that is sort of, well, rather tiring:
- My job is in flux because a company merger is having it's trickle-down effects as "synergies" are reviewed and redundancies are being vacated.
- My Chipmunk is near the end of the school year getting by on excited jitters for summer and trying her best not to drive me crazy with her giddiness (she can be so sweet sometimes lol!).
- I'm re-reading G.R.R. Martin's A Song of Fire of Ice from the beginning and have floundered into another state of mourning from falling in love with and losing Ned Stark all over again. This time, I think my emotional state is much better and I should be able to read the first four books all the way through, unlike my last attempt.
- And my writing has me in a unique position. Under my pen name, I've released four short stories and now a boxed set. Yet under my Angela Brown name, I'm apparently stuck in Edit-ville. I can't blame writer's block for not starting my third story in my Shadow Jumpers series (should have started over two months ago). The words are there, I'm just procrastinating
Part of me wants to fret. But if there's one thing I've learned thus far on this writing journey, it's to keep it moving. If I let myself fret over the procrastination, I'll worry the words right out of my head. So to ensure I don't go completely away from my goal of completing the Shadow Jumpers series, I've got a special project underway, an illustration piece I hope to share soon. So far, the work on it is nice. And to keep my head in the game, let me share this little number (thanks Heather McCorkle):
Anyone who's read Neverlove or They All Fall Down can take this button and let other readers know that Team Basil is alive and well, or rather, as alive as a reformed servant of hell can be :-)
What do you do to keep your goal front and center when it tries to remove itself as a blip on your radar?
May Flowers
April showers are supposed to bring May flowers. Let's take a look at what cropped up for the month of May goal-wise
Release Confessions of a Sex Fiend boxed set by (alter ego) Rayven Godchild, 5/26/2014 - Done, got this baby out in the world and will be having a virtual book tour during the month of June.
Work on ONCE UPON A SUMMONS, MG fairy tale smash up - I had the privilege of being part of Adventures of YA Publishing's First Five Pages Workshop. The feedback provided was helpful and I think I've made some positive headway. I've got lots more to do with feedback from other great CPs so I look forward to doing more on this one.
Begin third book in Shadow Jumpers trilogy - Uh...still a no go :-(
Begin another round of edits for BEACON (Ripped Ties series), my YA urban fantasy dystopian - I got some great feedback from one of my awesome CPs and have begun edits for this one so definitely excited.
I can't call the month of May a bust, but I do wish I could have gone full on green across the board.
And here's an excerpt from BEACON:
“My deal,” she leaned toward me with her face inches from mine, “is that anybody else in New Festus would have the patrol agent’s laser rifle pointed in their face or worse…locked up in the Steels. No excuses.” She stomped back to my desk and glanced over it. Three gold coins sat in a row. Her sneer deepened, face bunched together like she’d sucked on a ripe lemon. “You! Ugh, still get a stupid coin without a full donation because your parents were chosen for Jubilee.”
“Yeah,” I said. My voice dropped to little more than a whisper. “They were. And they’re missing…or dead. Thanks for the reminder, Whitley.”
Her face took on a powdered pale shade as the blood and anger drained away. “I just meant that, well, you know, just didn’t want you abusing that because you think you’ll be chosen, too.”
I jumped to my feet. “I don’t want it! You can take the damn Jubilee and toss it for all I care. Look what it got them. That’s all I’m allowed to have of my mom and dad. No one knows where they’re at! Frag it all, Whitley!”
Remembering my parents always pained me, but at the moment, I saw my chance. I flopped on my bed and covered my head with my pillow. I worked up a few broken breaths, just on the cusp of a sob. Heaven, please, Whitley, just fall for it.
“Macie? I’m, I’m sorry. It’s just…never mind. Look, Thomas is manning our kitchen this month. He should have dinner ready now.” Her soft soles whispered as she crept close to me. I barely felt her fingertips graze my leg. “I didn’t mean to…” She lifted her hand and shuffled away, the door quietly clicking closed.
I laid there a moment, glad my little acting job worked. I wiped at an unwanted tear. Not much acting involved.
So what did you get done in the month of May? Any special announcement to share?
