Cowboy Romance with Whaaaaa?

Texas Twang (Bryson Corners #1)
Lexie Duval has always gone after what she wants, and she wants Drew Benson. The tall, sexy, mocha cowboy is one hunk of man she’d love to get her hands on. A rodeo cowboy through and through, she just hopes he can stay on for longer than eight seconds.
But when their time together uncovers some surprising secrets, Lexie isn’t sure what to think or how to feel. Will Drew still want her when he finds out? Or will he push her away and move on?

Excerpt

Lexie fluffed her curly blonde hair, checked to make sure the girls were still behaving and hadn’t completely spilled out of her top – however, a little peek never hurt – then she sauntered over to one yummy Drew Benson. It was only neighborly to introduce herself, after all. She sidled up to him, brushing against his body to gain his attention. When he was focused on her, she gave him her slowest, sexiest smile, the one that had gotten her into more trouble than she’d like to remember, and laid her hand on his arm.
“Hey there, cowboy. You’re looking mighty lonely standing over here by yourself.”
His gaze traced her curves, of which there were plenty, and his eyes lit in appreciation.
“I suppose you’re offering to keep me company?” he asked, his Texas drawl sending shivers down her spine. Lord, but she loved a man with an accent.
“Word around town is that you’re old man Benson’s grandson. Thing is, you don’t sound like an Okie.”
His lips tipped up on one corner, as his eyes crinkled in merriment. “And what do I sound like?”
She bit her lip, looking up at him from under her lashes. A move she’d practiced for hours in front of the mirror as a teen.
“A hot, mouthwatering, Texas cowboy.”
About the Author
Paige Warren spends her days weaving tales about alpha male cowboys and the women who love them. There's nothing hotter than a man in tight Wranglers and a pair of well-worn boots. You have to admit, there's something sexy about a man who knows how to use a rope!
A cat lover, she has more than one furbaby running around, keeping her company in the wee hours of the morning as she tries to find just the right way to say "His skin gleamed, the early morning rays caressing his sun bronzed flesh, as he studied her from beneath the brim of his Stetson." Or, you know, something similar.
When Paige isn't dolling out tons of affection on the furbabies, or slurping down a pot of coffee (Yes! A whole pot!) so she can get in her daily word count, she enjoys reading and watching movies - romances, usually.

Hosting The Paranormal Hour (Thanks, Gwen Gardner!!!!)

The Paranormal Hour With Angela Brown

*On blog-stage, Angela Brown sits in a chair, a low table separates her from a sectional sofa where her guests are seated. Someone up in the rafters is adjusting the lights, another is testing sound. Indigo is seated nearest to Angela, Badger next to her, then Simon. Angela is going through her notes prior to air time. She reads cue cards, raises eyebrows, snorts a little*

*Director holds up fingers: three, two, one. The “On the Air” light comes on*

Angela: Welcome to the Paranormal Hour. We have an interesting agenda today, to say the least.

Gwen Gardner’s Indigo Eady “Cozy” Paranormal Mystery series plays on the periphery of this world and the paranormal dimension. Mostly ghosts. In her newest series, she picks up the same characters and drops them firmly over the line into the paranormal zone. Of course there are still ghosts, but Indigo and her team of teenage sleuths discover that there is so much more.

And so I’ve invited a few of the cast members from Second Death, the first novella in the Afterlife series, to talk about a couple of the creatures that I find, quite frankly, hard to believe.

Please welcome Indigo, Simon and Badger.

*Applause*

Angela: So tell me, what exactly is a Gardengoyle?

Indigo: It’s kind of hard to describe. I would never have believed it if I hadn’t seen them with my own eyes. They’re actually related to Gargoyles, only smaller. But they’re still huge. About seven feet tall, with wings and a tail. A bit intimidating, really, but sort of cute, too.

Angela: Cute? Like a puppy?

Simon: *snort* In a puggish sort of way. I’m sorry, Indigo, but I don’t see how you can call them cute. They’re from the Gargoyle phylum. Their ancestors were created to scare away evil. You’ve gotta be pretty flippin’ ugly to scare evil away.

Badger: That’s true, mate, but Glomp does seem to be quite attracted to Gertie. So really, it goes back to beauty being in the eye of the beholder. They probably think we’re extremely ugly.

Simon: Well, I can see how they would think that about you…

Angela: *holds up finger and tries to interject* Now, let’s play nice, boys…

Indigo: No, he’s right, Simon. I was a little scared when we first met them because it was just so surprising…

Simon: *scoff* A little scared? You were hiding behind Badger!

Indigo: Maybe so, but at least I wasn’t the one squealing like a girl…

Angela: *tries interjecting again* Uh, guys, maybe we should all calm down…

Simon: I didn’t…

Badger: You did, dude…

Angela: *rises from her seat and walks center stage, her back to her guest panel, argument continuing* HeHe, teenagers! Well there’s one way to settle this argument. Let’s check out the excerpt:

...I stepped forward gingerly, taking a shooters stance with my right leg and right shoulder forward. I took another cautious step. Something shifted in the shadows on either side of the doors and before I could react I was yanked back, nearly off my feet, by Badger. Sandwiched between the boys, we watched as two hideous figures emerged, one a grayish-purple, the other a bluish-gray. We staggered backwards, holding onto each other. My heart pounded in my ears.
The figures stopped just out of the shadows, fully visible under the moon glow.
I gasped.
“W-w-what are they?” Simon croaked.
“I dunno.” Badger stared up at the creatures. He grasped my shoulder, painfully, and pulled me behind him. All the while we inched backwards.
I peered around Badger to get a better look. “I do. I know what they are. But—they don’t exist.”
“Uh, would you care to enlighten us about the non-existent creatures who may or may not be standing before us?” said Badger, a note of exasperation creeping into his voice.
I grasped his jacket tightly between my fingers, as if the tighter I hung on, the safer I’d be. “Th-th-they’re gargoyles.”
“Are they dangerous?” asked Badger.
“Dangerous? Look at them!” exclaimed Simon, on the point of hysteria. “Talons and tails can’t be a good thing. Just sayin’. And are those… wings?
“And horns,” I added, as the purplish-grey dude leapt forward, extending a twenty foot wingspan. I’m not gonna lie, I hid my face in Badger’s jacket and waited for the blow. But…
“Name please?”

Gardengoyles - cute or ugly? What do you think?

While contemplating if Gardengoyles are cute or not (even if in a puggish kind of way lol!) make sure to check out this awesome novella by Gwen Gardner.
Second Death:

The Sabrina Shores spirit community is in crisis.
Ghosties are mysteriously disappearing at an alarming rate.
They’re simply…gone. A second death.

The clues are limited, but it’s clear that the one common factor is Gertrude’s Garden, the nightclub social center of the spirit community which just happens to adjoin the Sabrina Shores cemetery: the one place Indigo makes a point of not going. Ever. She has her reasons.

Indigo Eady:

Much to her chagrin, Indigo Eady is a celebrity among spirits. She’s the girl who can see and speak with them. She has a proven track record in helping spirits find their murderers, so it’s no surprise when she’s drafted onto the Missing Paranormal Committee. Who better to help them than the experienced teenage ghost whisperer- investigator and her friends?

Gwen Gardner is a native Californian living in sunny San Diego, where her love of reading and writing led to a BA in English literature. Life is now complete with her husband, two dogs and a daily call from her daughter.

Since ghosts feature prominently in her young adult Indigo Eady Paranormal “Cozy” Mystery series, she has a secret desire to meet one face to face - but will run screaming for the hills if she ever does. Gwen adores travel and experiencing the cultures and foods of different countries. She is always up for an adventure and anything involving chocolate - not necessarily in that order.

IRC 2014: What a Blast!!!

Oh was IRC (Indie Romance Convention) 2014 memorable!

There was so much fun to be had and lots of learning. The first two days were writer-focused, especially for those who were aspiring authors. Established authors, like J.M. Madden, Holly Roberts, Sharon Hamilton, Teresa Gabelman, S.E. Smith and more shared their thoughts, ideas and things they did that helped them along the way. Most of it I knew but it's always good to receive affirmation and a few good lucks from those making their way.

~~~But the real fun happened when the author-sponsored events went down.~~~
Here I am getting all tied up at the BDSM showcase. Yeah, taking one for the team lol!!
Then at the Build a Hero event, poor Eve just couldn't get close to Hilde's real thing :-)
There was 1920's fun. Cindy was gorgeous while I went with short, sexy and uber-silly.
For the event Hallee Bridgeman and I sponsored, the Fall into Sweet Romance event (not as Rayven Godchild of course lol!!!) there were sweets, treats and excellent prizes, including a brand new Kindle Fire HD.
The cute part was getting to share love with the mascot Sean the Sheep (I didn't name him lol!!) Here is my favorite pose with Sean, which includes the fabulous Jacqueline Rhoades.
The one that touched my heart is the one where my roommate, a reader who was there to get her fill of books, books and more books, decided that she had to selfie with a particular poster. Check the background and see if you recognize a book cover or two :-)
***I heart Karen Henderson.***
So, I can honestly say that I had a fantastically, wonderful, super-fun time. IRC 2015, I'm looking at you. Just got to see if I can get there lol!!
Have you been to any conventions lately, whether as a reader or an author? How was your experience?
Wherein Kai Strand Displays Her Awesomeness!
Hey everybody, my name is Kai Strand. I was unpacking books at a signing and came across a copy of King of Bad with a torn cover. Bummer. I can’t sell that! But my loss is your gain. Because I can hold a giveaway instead! (WOOT! Oops, sorry for the interruption, Kai. As you were saying...)
As I was saying (holding back a chuckle), along with a slightly damaged copy of King of Bad, I’m also giving away several sets of character trading cards. These cards have been specially designed for book one in the series. There will be a separate set of cards designed for each book – so be among the first to own a set.
About the book:
Jeff Mean would rather set fires than follow rules or observe curfew. He wears his bad boy image like a favorite old hoodie; that is until he learns he has superpowers and is recruited by Super Villain Academy – where you learn to be good at being bad. In a school where one kid can evaporate all the water from your body and the girl you hang around with can perform psychic sex in your head, bad takes on a whole new meaning. Jeff wonders if he’s bad enough for SVA.
He may never find out. Classmates vilify him when he develops good manners. Then he’s kidnapped by those closest to him and left to wonder who is good and who is bad. His rescue is the climactic episode that balances good and evil in the super world. The catalyst – the girl he’s crushing on. A girlfriend and balancing the Supers is good, right? Or is it…bad?
Available in print or electronic: Whiskey Creek Press, Amazon, Barnes and Noble
Excerpt:
[Pyro] swung the door open with a flourish and indicated for Jeff to go inside. Jeff stepped into the doorway and stopped. They were in some sort of gymnasium. Kids ranging from about 12 to 18 years old were hard at work testing their athleticism in a freak show sort of way. A girl did chin-ups at twice the speed of a top Olympian. A boy ran across a high wire. The most beautiful girl Jeff had ever laid eyes on leaned against the wall across the room. Jeff tore his eyes from her when an oddly shaped ball soared over the heads of the kids. Two boys enjoyed a game of catch. At least Jeff thought the sneers on their faces indicated enjoyment. Suddenly a head popped out of the ball.
“Come on, you wimps, get further apart.”
Jeff’s stomach lurched when he realized the ball was a contorted girl.
In the far corner of the gym a couple of kids were involved in extreme wresting. Jeff watched one kid leap six feet off the ground and pile drive the other kid into the thick stack of mats. He thought they’d have a future in WWE if the super villain thing didn’t pan out for them. Jeff’s gaze wandered back to the beautiful redhead. She smiled at him and his stomach fluttered.
Pyro nudged Jeff into the gym and let the door close. “Each S.V. has at least one prominent ability. Most of us are faster and stronger than the average human, but there are a few that are faster or stronger than the average S.V. There are also those of us who have fire as well as those who have ice. You can usually find an S.V. with a complementary ability to yours.” Pyro pointed at a dark haired girl standing in the center of the room.
The girl had a large bucket in front of her. Her face was contorted with concentration, but Jeff couldn’t see anything happening. Then all at once a geyser of water burst toward the ceiling and it fell back down on the assemblage in a misty rain. The girl’s face broke into an exultant smile as the dripping kids groaned and grumbled around her.
“Wow, that’s really hard to do,” Pyro said, “break an element into so many little particles. She’ll have a headache later.”
Reviews:
I found myself falling in love with all the characters in the book. I loved the different abilities each one of them have. Kai did an outstanding job writing this book. I could not put it down. It is filled with lots of action and even some romance. Everything you want in a book. Victoria for Page Turners Blog
The Paper Magician by Charlie N. Holmberg
It's my pleasure to host authors at my blogspot. Having read Charlie Holmberg's work before - and hosted her here as well - I'm glad to say that she's returned to share her writing finesse with me, erm, us once again. So here's to Charlie and...
The Paper Magician
Ceony Twill arrives at the cottage of Magician Emery Thane with a broken heart. Having graduated at the top of her class from the Tagis Praff School for the Magically Inclined, Ceony is assigned an apprenticeship in paper magic despite her dreams of bespelling metal. And once she’s bonded to paper, that will be her only magic…forever.
Yet the spells Ceony learns under the strange yet kind Thane turn out to be more marvelous than she could have ever imagined—animating paper creatures, bringing stories to life via ghostly images, even reading fortunes. But as she discovers these wonders, Ceony also learns of the extraordinary dangers of forbidden magic.
An Excisioner—a practitioner of dark, flesh magic—invades the cottage and rips Thane’s heart from his chest. To save her teacher’s life, Ceony must face the evil magician and embark on an unbelievable adventure that will take her into the chambers of Thane’s still-beating heart—and reveal the very soul of the man.
~*~
Angela had the awesome idea of fleshing out The Paper Magician by creating a ten-song soundtrack for it. And man, did I do a lot of soul- and lyric-searching for this! I hope you enjoy listening to these songs. (You can also listen to The Paper Magician, which is available in audiobook!)
Catch the Rift!
Today, M. Pax, well known for her Backworlds series, Renaissaince of Hetty Locklear and other great stories, is bringing the world another fantastic read.
Welcome to Settler, Oregon, where the living is, well, the living is worth checking out in...
The Rifters, Book I
About The Rifters
The Gold Rush trickles to a fool’s quest and a string of stagecoach heists. In 1888, Earl Blacke decides to make a new start and become a better man. He escapes into the mountains, heading north. In the wilds of Oregon, a rift inside an ancient volcano opens and sends him into the future, into the present day. It also shaves forty years off his age, forty years to live over again and atone for what he’s done.
Starting over is hard to do. In current day New York, Daelin Long’s dream job at a publishing house goes the way of the dinosaurs her sister chases. With no money and nowhere else to go, Daelin accepts the librarian position in her sister’s dinky town in the middle of Oregon. Nestled inside ancient volcanic peaks, the town of Settler holds onto many secrets. Residents roam the streets with weirdly fashioned devices, and odd lights pulse in the night skies. People whisper of a phantom outlaw and start dying, murdered and missing their heads. On top of it all, Daelin’s sister is missing, and Daelin doesn’t know who to trust.
Earl knows more than he’s saying. He shares a notorious history with the phantom, one he’ll see remains buried. Keeping Daelin’s sister’s secrets is his only chance at redemption, and the only way to keep this world safe.
Here's a taste
Resurrected. George “Haw Shot” Hawley hadn’t expected such a thing. Testing his body, he rolled his shoulders and shook each limb. They all worked, except his head. If he moved it too much, it fell off. Yet his senses worked, and he could speak. So he didn’t have much to grumble about, except for the strange thoughts sometimes invading his mind. No problem. He’d get rid of the birdman’s influence soon enough. It had no strength, annoying him like a case of the hiccups.
“Haw, haw!” Anyone in George’s way would be sorry. He hadn’t changed at all, except for the empty holsters. Hell on hot sand, he wanted a gun.
The birdman tasted strange, like fresh peas and sour beer. It tried to tell George what to do. Grab the man watching us.
Haw Shot hated being told what to do, but he hated being spied on more. “Haw, haw.” His first couple of steps stumbled. The nippy air pressed into his muffled senses, which worked slow. Everything about him worked slow, except for his hate and the pretty vows the birdman whispered in his mind. Kill. Revenge. Blood. Bart lives, but not for long. Not if you swear to listen to me.
Revenge had a ring to it. Maybe the thing in his head was his guardian angel. What else could have resurrected him from the grave?
IWSG - Just Keep Swimming
First Wednesday of the month has become a bit of a comfort zone for me. Thanks to Alex Cavanaugh's brainchild, I come at each IWSG post (click here for the details) with an eagerness, whether things feel like they're spiraling out of control or things are setteled in cruise control. That's because it's such a wonderful time to vent, commisserate and/or celebrate. Today...let's all celebrate. Why? Because we are still moving, grooving, writing, formulating plots, dancing with shiney ideas and chasing our dreams.
Perseverance, people, is a we-can-do-this-stick-to-it thing that keeps pressing us forward, no matter the size of the step.
With perseverance, I completed my August 2014 goals:
 - Finish second half of edits for MG story OUAS: Done, and goodness I really like this story
 - Format Secret Lilies for kindle: Available now at Amazon
 - Critiques for online crit group and a special crit for a friend: I'm so ready for my friend to finish work on the story because I really enjoyed it and want to get me copy as soon as possible. I'm looking forward to the next round of crits from my online group.
 - Read and review story for a friend: Made sure to add review to Goodreads and Amazon
I don't get all green across the board all the time, but the rare time it happens is a bit of extra encouragement.
Last, but certainly not least, with perseverence, I participated in NaNoWriMo in the fall of 2011 and started on a story that led to more writing, rewriting, editing, editing some more, subbing and getting rejected a few times (I really enjoy the story as a personal read and almost self-published but something kept telling me to just keep swimming), editing some more then subbing to one place...
to get accepted at Evernight Teen Publishing.
BEACON, my YA dystopian/urban fantasy, will be coming soon to an e-retailer near you. More deets as they come.
So keep trying, and try again. Do what you feel is good for the soul and...just keep swimming.
