IWSG and Getting it In

The first Wednesday of the month can sometimes sneak up on us and we're back to another post for IWSG. Click here for the details of this wonderful group and for visiting other great blogs that participate.

In this writing life, one of the struggles we deal with is finding time to write. And that is this month's question: How do you find the time to write in your busy day?

Honestly, there are days that I don't. After...
getting up at 6:30 in the morning...
dropping my kiddo off at school...
then going straight to work...
spending lunchtime taking care of my dog and scrapping together a piecemeal lunch out of leftovers to heat up and munch on once I hurry back to work...
then pick up my kiddo after work...
prepare and eat dinner...
review homework...
and catch up on e-mails...
I barely have the energy let alone the desire to have a butt-in-chair session knocking out words on my work in progress. But that is what I try to do, at least 2 to 3 nights out of the week after I ensure my kiddo is in bed resting. I'm trying to do more by spending time being present with her and investing in our relationship now, something that has grown to become very important to me. On the weekend, I work on scheduling blog posts, critiquing any items I've committed to critiquing, and getting in some real butt-in-chair sessions. It makes for slower going on the writing front, but it's better than the procrastinating I was doing before where I was getting nothing done.

Finding the time to write can be difficult in a busy day. But it can be done.
*I've read of some parents going to the school pick up line a few minutes early so they can get in some writing.
*If your job isn't too demanding, you can sometimes sneak in a few paragraphs on your WIP. Just keep it on your handy dandy thumb drive to keep with you.
*If your lunch isn't like mine and eaten up by travel and dog maintenance time, then you can work in some words.
*I'm not an early to bed, early to rise person. I crawl under the covers and am eventually overtaken by sleep. I wake up at some awful time of 0'dark thirty then spend the time dosing in and out of sleep until my alarm goes off. But if you are early to bed, rising early is a good time to work in some word count before the birds began to chirp.

So tell me, what do you do to get the writing in?

Shining the Spotlight on Between Two Fires by Mark Noce

It's my pleasure to share Between Two Fires with you today and shine the light on this great author, Mark Noce.

Praise for Between Two Fires
“A spirited ride through a turbulent slice of Welsh history!” – Paula Brackston, NYT Bestselling author of The Witch’s Daughter

“A fast-paced read that has a wonderfully visual style and some memorable characters. Mark Noce combines Welsh history with a touch of folkloric magic in this promising debut novel. Lady Branwen is a strong and engaging narrator and the turbulent setting of early medieval Wales makes a fine backdrop for an action-packed story.” – Juliet Marillier, Bestselling author of Daughter of the Forest and Wolfskin

About Between Two Fires
Saxon barbarians threaten to destroy medieval Wales. Lady Branwen becomes Wales’ last hope to unite their divided kingdoms when her father betroths her to a powerful Welsh warlord, the Hammer King.

But this fledgling alliance is fraught with enemies from within and without as Branwen herself becomes the target of assassinations and courtly intrigue. A young woman in a world of fierce warriors, she seeks to assert her own authority and preserve Wales against the barbarians. But when she falls for a young hedge knight named Artagan her world threatens to tear itself apart. Caught between her duty to her people and her love of a man she cannot have, Branwen must choose whether to preserve her royal marriage or to follow her heart. Somehow she must save her people and remain true to herself, before Saxon invaders and a mysterious traitor try to destroy her.

Release Date: August 23, 2016

Mark Noce writes historical fiction with a passion, and eagerly reads everything from fantasy to literature. Born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, he’s an avid traveler and backpacker, particularly in Europe and North America. He earned his BA and MA from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, where he also met his beautiful wife. By day, he works as a Technical Writer, having spent much of his career at places like Google and Facebook. In addition to writing novels, he also writes short fiction online. When not reading or writing, he’s probably listening to U2, sailing his dad’s boat, or gardening with his family.
His debut novel, Between Two Fires, is being published by Thomas Dunne Books (an imprint of St. Martin's Press and Macmillan). It is the first in a series of historical fiction novels set in medieval Wales.
